Hello! Are we all ready and excited for another big Windows 10 update‽ Yes, no, maybe, I don’t know? Can you repeat the question?^
As you may have guessed, I’m not 100% excited by this update…
But here are the highlights:
- Microsoft Edge web browser gets an update, it’s faster and has a full-screen mode (press F11, F11 also works in most other web browsers, since like forever!)
- New Photos app with Story Remix. Beta News reports “The redesigned Photos app gives you the ability to add filters, text, 3D effects and ink to your photos and video”
- Security updates, as ever Microsoft don’t tend to announce what they have fixed, but the big one is “The SMBv1 protocol, exploited by the recent WannaCry ransomware attack, has been removed.”
- Cortana gets an update, you can ask it more questions and it can find photos (if you use Cortana let me know and I can go into more detail on this)
- Two things worth reading if you click through to the “full list of changes” links below are My People (which sounds like an Oasis album) and Mixed Reality (an R.E.M. album?).
Should I install this update?
Yes. It’s important to install all Windows updates, they contain software updates, bug fixes and security fixes.
But I don’t really need any of these updates
Sadly you can’t pick and choose just the security updates, it’s an all or nothing situation and you need them all.
When will I get this update?
Over the next few months (don’t be alarmed if you don’t get it right away) it will roll out through Windows Update, you might get other updates first and it could be early next year before your system get it.
I would probably advise against manually installing the update, drop me a message first if you want to do this and we can talk it though.
Can I see a full list of changes anywhere?
Read the full list of changes here: https://betanews.com/2017/10/17/windows-10-fall-creators-update-changelog/ or https://www.theverge.com/2017/10/17/16487760/microsoft-windows-10-fall-creators-update-features-review
Bring on the updates!
Mike

Hello Tim,
I ran the Autumn Creators update recently.
Since doing it I have found that the search facility in outlook runs painfully slowly.
What can I do to restore the previous service?
Happy Christmas

Hi Mike,
Every Wednesday I carry out a full scan on my laptop.About two or three weeks ago I had a big
Windows 10 update and the webpage for doing the scan changed. It went from being straight
forward to having to hunt for it. Yesterday it was nowhere to be found? Windows Defender still carries out a daily security check. Am I right in assuming that it will no longer be available
to carryout a full scan.
Ernie.

Hello. Ah I don’t think I’ve had the same update as you yet (I will set it off installing after I’ve answered questions here)
So I can still get to the “advanced scan” option which gives me a full scan and offline scan option? Is this the one that’s gone for you?
I’ve dropped you an email with screen shots of my setup.
I will install this update and see if it’s been moved.
Thanks
Mike
PS There are other anti-virus products you could use which offer a full scan, Kaspersky has a new free offering which is getting good reviews https://www.kaspersky.co.uk/free-antivirus

Greetings ! Re: Cortana – I heard a tale that might alert users…
It seems ‘Joe’, his trusty smartphone as ever in his back pocket, was sounding off about someone to his buddy. Siri (or cortana), ever anxious to help, recognised the name and dialled it… and the subject of the tirade heard every word of part two…

Oh dear 🙁 That’s bad.
It is something to be aware of with all these listening devices we are letting into our homes. Some countries have designated some of the devices as “spying” devices which means they are subject to strict rules.
As it’s a Friday and the boss (Tim) is at home with his kids and not reading my replies on here (I hope) I’m going to link you to this article about what it would be like if internet connected devices had warning signs on them like cigarettes
A Pre-Warning before you click this link. It is NOT family friendly, 18+ rated, it might offed some people, sorry, NSFW (Not Suitable For Work, so obviously I shared it at work)

Happy Friday.

Thanks Mike. My point was raised only because Tim posted about W10 Fall update and asked for comments re Cortana.
I do believe we (all) have an inability to think of the surroundings to our choice / pursuit of an aim. 30+ years ago I was at a conference triggered by Scandinavian ‘laws’ prohibiting export of personal data. Much righteous indignation and support for the action. Until someone said “How then are you going to have a hire car ready for you on arrival in New York ?” At which point the scales fell from their eyes.
In yesteryear, letters and invoices had in the bottom corner ‘E&OE’ which is, being interpreted, ‘Errors and Omissions Excepted’: the weasel-word clause.
Nowadays, and without apparent reaction, we see pirated boilerplate text about a page long, saying ‘ but you can’t rely on the foregoing …(because it was written by a human?) Ho; hum.

It very much seems the world has changed, but without any actual change?
Data protection across countries is really tricky. With the new EU Data Protection Act coming into force it’s affecting companies all over the world. And the number of disclaimers and warnings on websites we need (we are still reviewing ours) seems to grow every day.
One way I escape from is all is to not read T&Cs (you should always read T&Cs) and to try and simplify my life by closing online accounts, as I said in the Password Video I have over 100 accounts, all of which store loads of data about me 🙁 .
I got a letter from an old bank the other day with a statement detailing a year’s transactions of 87p just sitting in the bank. But they sent me two letters and 8 sheets of paper to tell me this. I will close the account later this week.
It’s really hard to think about all the consequences of a law… The world is a complicated place…
For human written content keep reading the Inner Circle, it’s all written by us, and probably contains many mistakes!
