Hi, Nick Dean here!
Kindly cancel my subscription to the Inner Circle, as I have not used it, & am unlikely to do so in future!
I absolutely love your emails + books, but at 78 years of age, I’m having to tighten my expenditure somewhat!
Please don’t delete
me entirely!

Hello David
Would it be possible for you to forward one of these emails to us at [email protected] please? That way we can see exactly what Microsoft are asking you to do.
Thank you

Hello Mike and Jess,
Your episode about On line Payment changes was very useful BUT much earlier this year (pre lock down) I tried to pay using Paypal for an online purchase, had to enter my phone number and they would only accept my mobile number. As I have no mobile signal here at home and there is only 10 minutes allowed from receiving the code number to entering it on the computer that was the end of the transaction. By the time I had left the house walked to where I could get a signal and back again the 10 minutes had well and truly expired! It will be interesting to learn how this can be overcome.
I very much applaud the introduction of added security but the “masterminds” forget about “not spots”!
Luckily, since lockdown I have managed with just using my debit card for on line grocery purchases

Hi Jenepher,
Ahhhh yes it’s frustrating when companies don’t think about how people will get a text message.
I also live in a place without a mobile signal, quite often I have to balance my phone upright in a window for a few minutes and it gets just enough signal to recieve a text message.
Many companies have an option to generate a code on your mobile device so you don’t have to get a signal.
I’ve just had a look and PayPal allows you to add an Authenticator App as a backup.
Let me know if you can get logged into PayPal at all (try the phone stood in the window trick), and if you can we’ll go through adding a backup login method in detail.
Thank you
Mike

Thanks to Jess and Mike,
your news about the security changes for online purchasing.
I’ve recently had an experience you may e interested in. On Tuesday morning, around 8.30 am we found a leak from water coming through my bedroom ceiling. I’ll leave you to imagine the events, but we managed to get a plumber who could come to us.. The online advert (Able group)had an emergency number, and they subcontract to various people around the area. That sub contractor contacted from its source, and it was nearly 7.0pm when he arrived. The ballcock in the header tank had stuck/broken; he made it safe so we could have the water turned on and the heating system running again. He ordered a replacement and said he would fix it when the part came. we’d had to give card details over the phone when we’d spoken to the group initially, but didn’t give the 3 numer security details on the back of the card. A month earlier we had used this company for an electrical problem, because local traders were unavailable. The electrician was quick, and did a good job, gave us a receipt and when finished we had a phone call, asking if it was ok. We then gave card security number and the money was taken from our account.
This time, we assumed the job would be completed and the same procedure would follow. However, it took multiple phone calls by my husband to find out if the part had arrived so the plumber could finish the job. I was shocked to see my statement showed that somehow the money had been taken, though I hadn’t given my security number to them. A further call elicited that what had been done was being classed as a completed job, and as they were a big company, they didn’t need to have security numbers!! Now today, the plumber has just replaced the ballcock and we will be billed for another job, which we feel is not legal.
I have sent an internal message to tell the building society what was done. If they accepted security details with the request for debiting the money, then I have to assume Able had retained my details from the earlier transaction. If nationwide had authorised payment without being given the numbers, then they must be at fault. I’m hoping to hear something a.s.a.p.
Sorry this has been so long, but I hope you can understand . Possibly it may be useful for others in a similar situation.
Your giggles make for a most friendly interlude and your enjoyment is obvious. Keep up the good work. Marie

Hi Marie,
It certainly sounds like a mistake on their part for billing you twice.
As it’s a phone call order they should ask for the three digits on the back of your card. I’d certainly question why they don’t need it.
Hopefully they will sort it. This isn’t the type of thing we’re really able to help with, but they don’t solve the problem or give a reasonable answer get back in touch and we can point you to some services who might be able to help.
Thanks
Mike

Well done – it was fun. We have all been having to learn some new tecky tricks. I am planning to host a Zoom morning gathering next week so lots of finger crossing.

Thanks Mary!
Oh if you want to do practice Zoom hosting give me a shout and we do a dry run.
I’ve had my mum practicing, she’s been on one with her Harp Group which went well.
Let me know how you get on!
Thanks
Mike =)
