This week my “Word to the Wise” isn’t really something that you need to know, or anything that will affect you. It’s just a little something that might interest you if you are a bit of a geek at heart, or if you have ever wondered!

URL
e.g.= “http://www.exampleURLfortheinnercircle.com
Definition : A URL (Uniform Resource Locator) address is the same thing as the address of a website. So, if anyone ever says “type the URL of the site” they basically mean the website address! Websites are found by their addresses. Each website had a URL assigned to it.
It can’t contain any spaces and an’t contain some symbols. They can be really different though. Not all URLs begin with “http://”, though. The first part of the URL (or web address) indicates what kind of resource it is directing you to. Here are a couple of examples that might clarify that bit!
http:// = (e.g http://www.exampleURLfortheinnercircle.com) A hypertext directory or document (like a webpage). This is the most common! Most websites you visit will start with “http://”
ftp = (e.g “//ftp.exampleURLfortheinnercircle.com“) a directory of files or an actual file available to download. Any web addresses that start with this will go straight to a file that you can download
news = (e.g. “//news.exampleURLfortheinnercircle.com“) Any web address that starts “news.” will take you straight to a news group
WAIS = (e.g. “//wais.exampleURLfortheinnercircle.com“) a database or document on a database (Wide Area Information Search)
Most of them you will never use or see, except “http” which is the most common.

Hope you found that interesting!
