Disclaimer: We are not actually building a radio station, sorry. Actually broadcasting on the airways (usually) requires a licence, I looked into this once. If anyone out there has a few £1000 they want to invest I have a radio business idea… “On the Mike”*. Basically (and I can totally sell you this idea / give more details), unlike traditional radio, DJs (or anyone!) pays to have a slot on the radio station…

But anyway, I digress…

When I was at University we came across the most amazing website called Pandora.com (not the jewellery people). The way this website worked was that you put in a song / artist you liked and it played similar music. You then had the option to vote on each track it plays for a particular station (or just to listen along), for example… if I put in ‘Simple Plan’ as a band, but then it played a type of music which didn’t quite match ‘pop punk’^ you could vote it down and it would play less of that type of music…

It was a wonderful way of finding new and yet familiar music, then one day this happened: 🙁

pandora

Pandora isn’t available where you are… yet.

So we gave up on it, (and years later it still says this) so we switched to Spotify, but, it just didn’t have the same “Magic” radio feature…

Then, a Clubroom Comment about a similar problem prompted me to look for something similar, and I found this…

An Alternative to Pandora, jango.com

http://www.jango.com/

To start your “radio station” head on over to jango.com, type in an artist you like in the box, or select a station from the list, and off you go…

You can then vote tracks up and down for that station and even skip ones you don’t like…

Want something different?

To change ‘radio stations’ click on the magnifying glass at the top of the page and type in a new artist.

How do they pay for this? Well, to be honest, I am not too sure, they promise to only give you 1 audio advert per day if you sign in with a Facebook account (and there aren’t loads even if you just use the “guest” service).  Not like our local radio station:
“The time is sponsored by [local shop]” … “It’s nearly 12.30” … “Time check sponsored by [Local shop]”…

Fancy listening to some new music based on artists you know you like? Give it a go here http://www.jango.com/

You can also download a free Jango app for smartphones (iPhone or Android) and tablets (iPad or Android).  And they don’t run any adverts on those at the moment!

What are you listening to Mike?

A little country music:
♫ Head Over Boots by Jon Pardi
♫ Crash and Burn by Thomas Rhett
♫ Cruise by Florida Georgia Line
