What is 5G? It’s the next version of the mobile phone network, 5G is an upgrade from the widely used 4G network and it promises faster data transfer to your mobile phone while you’re out and about. You need to be in a 5G area (see below) and have a mobile/tablet that’s 5G ready in order to benefit from the faster speeds.
Some of you might have got a new snazzy phone with “5G Ready” plastered all over the box… But can you get 5G? This handy website tells you if you can or if it’s coming soon…
Each mobile network (O2, Vodafone, EE etc…) has their own plans and timelines for rolling out 5G across the UK.
If you want to find out if 5G is planned soon for your area, or if you’re lucky enough to have it already then you can take a look at this website, pop your postcode in and click “Check coverage”. It’ll show you what’s being planned/rolled out already. Helpful Book’s results can be seen above, not brilliant!
Once you’ve got the brief results, click on “Exact Coverage” for your chosen network and it’ll show a map that gives more detail of where the coverage ends. For us it ends well before our front door!
Here’s the website: https://5g.co.uk/
Hope you have more luck with 5G than we are! I’ve included some notes below about some mobile companies and some further reading if you want to know more about 5G, 4G and related stuff!
Note: Some networks like GiffGaff, Sky, Tesco etc… don’t have their own network, they just rent bits from the main network providers and they might roll out 5G later than the main network. For example GiffGaff uses the O2 network but currently doesn’t have any plans to offer 5G whereas O2 does.
