Hello,
In this episode of ICTV, we introduce the newest member of our team, Mike. He’s just started this week and he agreed to feature in this months episode to help us out.
We also answer some of the questions that you left for us. Don’t worry if we don’t answer your question, we had so many that we chose a few for this month and a few that we’ll cover in next months episode and any that we don’t manage to cover, we’ll write a reply to you.
The topics we cover are:
- How do you know if a site is safe (or secure)?
- Real-time to text on a computer, laptop, tablet or smartphone,
- Upgrading an iPad (or any device really).
Having problems playing it? Watch it on YouTube here
If you have any questions, just drop us a comment and we’ll get back to you as soon as we can,

I said I am NOT compute literate. I just sent a long message and ‘touched’ the wrong button and the message disappeared.Apologies for repeating the message here. After having my system upgraded from Microsoft ‘7’ to Microsoft ’10’. I discover I cannot action my head-set for SKYPE. How do I action my head-set.Also, when I tried to connect to YAHOO e-mail, I found a large banner across the page and the e-mil was faded out behind the banned so I am prevented from reading it.Lastly ‘good I hear you say’ I am not computer literate and because of shaky hands, at times I push the wrong button, PLEASE HELP. Note… I have talked to the technician who help me yesterday and he seem to clear the problems over the phone. When I logged on to-day, the problems are still there and am too embarrassed to ring him again.Ron

This message keeps coming up on PC running Windows 10 – how do I stop it?
System Warning

As a result all systems files are automatically deleted in n seconds
Then another window pops up PC Repair Tool asking to download.
This is worrying – any suggestions?

Hi Robert,
Can you run a virus scan?
Just to rule out that it is a virus.
Next, we will manually check windows to do this type CMD in the windows search box and right click the CMD logo and choose run as administrator
Type the following in the box that appears chkdsk C: /f /r /x and press enter on the keyboard.
If it says that the current device is in use check on next restart or something along those lines type in Y and then press enter.
Restart your machine and let it run its checks this could take a few hours.
Let me know if it’s fixed after that.
Thanks,
Mike.

Am I understanding correctly? If I join BT FON I don’t need EE? and everything including access to TV is included in their fee?
May 16, 2019 at 9:38 am
Hi Joan,
You would need to join BT for your broadband connection. This would then mean that you’d be given a BT account and wherever you are in the country, if you’re in a BT OpenZone, you can sign in using your BT account and access the wifi network.
If you join BT for broadband, you’ll most likely get offered to sign up for their TV package, they’ll probably offer you it free for 6 months and then you’ll pay full for the rest of the contract.
Be careful if you cancel your EE internet whilst you’re still in your contract as they may charge you to leave it early.
I hope this clarifies things,
Thanks
Jess

Subject: Wifi Acess Confusion
Background: The village I live in is on the edge of three wifi signal areas. There are certain small parts of the village where one has to move a few feet in order to use a mobile phone. It also causes problems for aerial installers which is how I know about this.
My Wifi provider is EE. I am on my third box since joining them and have had no problems switching to new boxes.
Problem: Suddenly I am receiving messages from BTOpenzone both when I log in and even as I type, asking if I want to buy anything from 1 hour to 30 days internet access through a BT Wifi Hotspot. The screen has “Fon” prominently displayed. The code is: BTWifi-with-FON
Normally my wifi is permanently routed through my current EE box. Now I have to open my wifi icon and actively switch back to the current EE password, sometimes several times in a session.
Why is this? Have I accidently asked to join BT when using the internet? but somewhere I read on a BT website that there was this new service which could be used without interfering with any other wifi provider – or have I misunderstood? And if so, what would be the point of it?
This has led me to look at my list of Wifi acess codes. As I use iCloud I can understand that some of the codes have been used by me on my tablet or iPhone when out & about and are recorded and accessible on my other devices.
For instance there are earlier EE versions for former boxes; two for TalkTalk when I used to be with them; and ones with codes I do not understand/recognise such as:
NetgearGuest, RPWL, Sky, BThubx2, Direct-6A-HP ENVY…
However, being tidy minded, I would like to keep on the list only those that are currently useful. Would it cause a problem if I got rid of the irrelevant ones? and How do I do that?
There is one in particular that I would worry about which describes itself as “Solar Wifi.” We have rented solar panels on our roof. My husband dealt with that some years ago. Do you think that we need to keep that/that it is in dailyuse? (It would not help to ask him as he is not very interested in computer matters….!)
Lastly, in connection with all this I get asked for a “WPA2 password.” What’s that?
This is my first use of the Clubroom. I am an 87 year old Apple user. I hope I am contacting you correctly?
May 15, 2019 at 9:34 am
Hi Joan,
BTWifi-with-FON, is BT’s auto-enrollment for all customers, this auto-enrollment allows people to connect to one of the largest free broadband networks in the world.
You can delete them as it should not cause any problems if you no longer use those WIFI connections.
Nearly all WIFI points bar some are protected via WPA2 encryption which is a password, you will need a password to access these WIFI points.
You may need to keep the Solar WIFI as they usually use WIFI connections to report data back to you such as how much energy is generated etc.
If you are getting annoyed at the BTWIFI one you can delete this WIFI access point by going to the list that you find your wifi connections clicking on it and pressing forget network.
Hope I answered all your questions.
Thanks,
Mike.

I inherited an early model apple iphone from my grandson, without manual
It has a Compass function but I do not know how to use it.
I turn it on, then calibrate it by ‘rolliing the circle around, and obtain the red arrow marked N for north. Suppose I want to keep driving 30 degrees – can I somehow fix the calibration for the duration of my trip?
May 7, 2019 at 11:14 am
Hi there,
Each time you open the app, does it ask you to calibrate it? Also, when the screen goes off, does it ask you to calibrate it again when you unlock the screen?
The best thing to do would be to turn the screen lock off so the screen stays on until you press the lock button.
To do this, open your Settings app on the iPhone and tap on Display. Then look for Auto Lock and tap on it to change it to Never.
Let me know how you get on,
Thanks,
Jess

I am about 20% through the windows 10 course, but have not accessed it for a few weeks. I am using an iPad. Now I cannot get the videoed information. The rectangles remain obstinately blank, despite repeated tapping! Help, please.
April 10, 2019 at 3:11 pm
Hi Roy,
Is this the same device as last time you used it.
What is your internet connection speeds to the iPad as this could be causing the problem?
Thanks,
Mike.
April 10, 2019 at 7:40 pm
Hello MikeEverything is exactly as when I last visited the course — iPad, chair position, room. Internet connection speeds, just measured from my chair on the Which site: download0.2Mbps, upload 3.4 Mbps, Response time 396ms.Perhaps curiously, measured immediately afterwards just adjacent to the router, two rooms away, the figures were0.2 Mbps, 2.1 Mbps, 347 ms.Over to you!!

Hi Roy,
Jess here, I’ll be helping Mike out today.
Have you used your iPad to browse the web recently? Have you noticed it takes quite a while to load webpages?
Your download speed and upload speed seem very low, who is your broadband provider? It might be worth calling them to see if they have any reported problems in your area and ask them if anything can be done to increase your broadband speed.
I would say that’s why the videos aren’t loading up properly.
Let me know how you get on,
Thanks
Jess

Hi,
Thanks very much for the advice on adding a Language App to my phone,
I checked it with the German Language which I am able to speak and its response was
a good quality, I also tried Russian which I am learning and found this very helpful
Very good audio quality.
April 1, 2019 at 9:21 am
Hi Patrick,
Glad this helped.
I had customers in my old job use this when there was a language barrier, really helps.
Thanks,
Mike.

Sorry, Jess, that last comment should have been addressed to you, not Mike. My apologies.

Thanks for the suggestion, Mike. Right clicking only allows me to add the whole of Symbol to the shortcut tab line, which is useful, but does not allow me to do anything with the individual symbols. This applies in both Word and Publisher. If you have any other bright ideas, I’d be glad to know.
February 27, 2019 at 10:54 am
Hi Graham,
I see, could you possibly send a screenshot of the default symbols screen to [email protected] so I can see whereabouts in Word/Publisher these options are?
Thanks
Jess

Hi Jess
You may remember back around Xmas I had a problem with the Windows 10 mail app not sending emails on my new Dell Inspiron 7000 laptop.
At last I’ve sorted this problem, after weeks of trying . This included contacting Dell several times, Dell taking over the laptop remotely, then giving up, and then sending an engineer. The engineer also gave up and Dell then agreed to supply a replacement laptop as they could not sort the problem.
The new laptop was no better, and the Windows 10 mail app still would not send.
The problem was eventually found to be caused by an app that Dell have included with new laptops called”Smartbyte”, which helps with video streaming. Once deleted all works fine.
I hope this will help you if anyone else has the same problem.

Hi Mike,
Yes, I do remember, we had a problem trying to find a solution but I’m glad it’s eventually been sorted out.
It’s strange how one app can cause problems for something completely unrelated.
Thank you for the update and it’s good to know for future reference,
Take care
Jess

Hi Jess,
I’ve got a real problem with Microsoft telling me that I have to change my password every month. I know now that this is a problem that a lot of people are experiencing. I’m not very computer literate but after a lot of problems with this issue I managed to phone Micosoft and personally got in touch with them (after a lot of hassle I might add). The first time it took around 3 hrs, where someone from Microsoft took charge of my mouse and eventually said they’d sorted it. It’s not sorted and this is 4 mths later. I’m so fed up with it. Can you help or have an answer?
February 26, 2019 at 2:27 pm
Hi Patricia,
Oh dear, it sounds like it’s been a bit of a nuisance for too long now.
Is it your password for your email account that they’re asking you to change? Or is it the password to get into your computer?
When you get prompted to change your password, is there an option to ignore the message or change your password reset options?
Sorry for all the questions, I hope I can help you with this problem,
Thanks
Jess

In Publisher and other programmes using Symbol, is it possible to designate a preferred choice; for instance, it offers three lengths of hyphen with one as the default. Can that default be changed?
February 26, 2019 at 1:34 pm
Hi Graham,
Thanks for getting in touch.
I’m not sure if it’s possible to change those defaults but you could try right-clicking on them in the symbols menu and seeing if there’s an option to make that one your default?
Let me know if that doesn’t work and I’ll see if I can find a different way.
Thanks
Jess

Welcome Mike.
I reckon to up grade to a new iPad when my old one won’t up date to the latest software by which time the security is not so good, it’s slower and there’s things it won’t do. The only trouble with that is the old ones not worth much, hence I’ve now got three.
Brian.
February 26, 2019 at 1:00 pm
Hi Brian,
That’s very true, I suppose you could use the old iPads as storage for photos and videos and even use old ones as music players?
Take care
Jess
