Applies to anyone with Windows 10.
So, there are conflicting reports about “Windows File History” but it looks likely[1] that it won’t be around much longer. Heres what you need to know, even if you don’t use Windows File History…

What is Windows File History?

File History is a feature of Windows that takes copies of your files and allows you to roll back to them if you lose them or mess them up in some way. However, we generally suggest not using this as when restoring files it’s all a bit tricky…

What’s happening in the “Fall/Autumn Creators Update”?

It looks like Microsoft are discontinuing this feature of Windows in the next update, you will sill (likely) be able to restore a backup you have already made, but you won’t be able to make any new backups using it. This might have the awesome side effect of stopping that annoying popup warning about File History Drive not being connected…

What you need to do…

If you don’t use Windows File History And you are backing up another way then you don’t need to do anything.

If you don’t use Windows File History And you are not backing up another way then you need to think about how you backup your files/photos/everything else, drop us a note and we can talk it through, everyone will need something slightly different.

If you do use Windows File History then you need to think about your backup plan, think about what you have that is currently being backed up to File History and what you need backed up. You might want to have a read of how I backup my stuff (Keeping in mind that this works for me and might not work for you) then pop back here and ask a question on the Clubroom and we can talk through some options for you.
Check out the related links at the end of this article for our other discussions on backups.

Stay backed up!
